  	Eliza Settle and Robert Settle attended a Baptist camp meeting in Amissville, as a young couple, when they decided to run away and get married. They went to Washington, D.C., but they couldn't get a license because Robert wasn't 21 yet. They returned to get his father's permission, and then went back to Washington to be wed. In 1928, they moved to Amissville and operated a 101-acre farm. Their life together was one of hard work. Eliza would work in the fields during the day and then return to the house to cook and do housework. They had their own cattle, sheep, hogs, chickens, orchard, and a garden, and only bought staples. She even sawed wood for the stove. Each year, they raised 20 acres of corn, which had to be cut and shocked by hand, and in her spare moments, Eliza would shuck the corn. Robert Settle died when he was 47 from complications of diabetes. There is an old cabin and cemetery on the Settle property that supposedly date back to the 1700's. Bill Settle, a grandson of Robert and Eliza Settle, says he remembers from his childhood, a man named John Majors came to visit the cemetery in the 1960's and scolded the family for letting the cabin and cemetery fall into disrepair. Mr. Major said that George Washington had stayed in the cabin when he visited the area. This story is plausible, as George Washington was a young surveyor for the town of Culpeper, from 1749 to 1752. Mr. Majors also hired some men from Culpeper to come and do some restoration work in the cemetery.

Dorothy was a member of the Massanova Pentecostal Church and the Sunday School Secretary since 1975. She also taught typing at Massanova Christian Academy. Dorothy was a lifetime NRA member. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 8 from 7-9 PM at Massanova Pentecostal Church, Castleton, VA. The funeral will be held on Friday, April 9 at 11:00 AM at Massanova Pentecostal Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memory Gardens, Jeffersonton, VA. Pallbearers are Ben Whorton, Aaron Whorton, Jonathan Whorton, Ronnie Frazier II, Zane Whorton, and Phillip Whorton. Honorary Pallbearers are Greg Freeman, Luke Whorton, and Dillon Whorton.
